'With Jesus, we learn as a joyful family and flourish to be the best that we can be'

Geography

The Amazon is the world’s largest tropical rainforest. Covering over 5.5 million square kilometres, it’s so big that the UK and Ireland would fit into it 17 times!

The Amazon is found in South America, spanning across Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana.

Watch the video taking you on a trip around the Amazon Rainforest and then read some fantastic facts about the Amazon Rainforest and some of the amazing animals which can be found below:

As beautiful as the Amazon Rainforest is, it is being cut down on a large scale-this is called deforestation. Reasons why the rainforests are being cut down include: timber extraction, mining, farming, construction of roads, expansions of cities, over population of people needing more land.

Read the rainforest leaflet, horrifying facts and then watch the effects of deforestation from the video link.

TASK:

Choose from one of the following tasks:

  • Write a persuasive argument about saving the Amazon Rainforest and putting an end to deforestation
  • Design and create a persuasive poster to help stop deforestation

Things to think about: How it contributes to the green house effect and global warming; animals which can be found there; medicines which have been discovered and are used to help people; tribes who are living in the rainforest; foods which have originated from the rainforest; plants and other forms of life which are only found in the rainforest, the amount of oxygen produced in the rainforest.

Fact 10 from 'Horrifying facts about deforestation' says that: "Half of the world’s tropical forests have already been cleared." What happens if all the rainforests are cleared in the future??
