Year 6 maths - your child will learn about:

  • Number and Place Value;
  • Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division;
  • Fractions;
  • Ratio and Proportion;
  • Algebra;
  • Measurement;
  • Properties of Shape;
  • Position and Direction;
  • Statistics.

By the end of year 6, children should be confident in solving complex maths problems, which involve using formal written methods, completing mental calculations and using the four fundamental maths operations to name a few.


In year 6 maths, children will solve multi-step problems, work with common factors, multiply and divide large numbers and more. Here are some more of the skills your child will develop:

  • Determine the place value of each digit in numbers up to 10,000,000.
  • Know the order of operations.
  • Use long multiplication to multiply multi-digit numbers up to four digits by a two-digit number.
  • Use short division or long division to divide numbers up to 4 digits by a two-digit number.
  • Add and subtract fractions with different denominators and mixed numbers.
  • Use simple formulae and express missing number problems algebraically.
  • Interpret and construct pie charts and line graphs.
