About Saint John Southworth

Saint John Southworth was an English Catholic martyr.

He is one of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales.

Father John Southworth came from a Lancashire family who lived at Samlesbury Hall.

His feast day is 27 June.

Welcome back and Happy New Year to you all!

I hope you all had a fantastic Christmas break after what can only be described as an incredibly busy first term! Mr Conway and I are eager to be back in school and continuing the excellent progress the children have already made this year. May I say thank you in advance to all the parents who regularly support their children with their homework. It really does make a difference and to know that what we do in school is being consolidated at home and helps your child make even more progress as the year continues.

Please see the curriculum overview for details of what your child will be learning in the Spring Term.

Southworth’s P.E. lesson will be on a Thursday; your child will need a full P.E. kit on this day. As timetables sometimes change, please can their P.E. kit be kept in school during the week. Just a reminder that children are not allowed to wear jewellery for school in line with LCC Health and Safety guidelines and therefore not P.E. sessions.

Reading is a very important part of your child’s learning and it is vital that they read at home as well as at school. Just as last term, the children have designated days for when their books will be changed. However, your child also has a designated reading day when they will be expected to bring their reading book into school so that myself or Mr Conway can listen to them read. We also write in their reading records when they have a guided reading group session, so ideally it would be useful if they came into school daily please.

Homework will be set on a weekly basis. This homework will always be based on areas that the children have already covered in class, helping to secure the children’s knowledge. If you need any resources, such as a number square for example, to help support your child just like in class, this can be arranged to be sent home too but please ask me in advance if this is something you think you and your child would benefit from so I can get the equipment together.

The new homework arrangements are as follows:

  • Spelling homework is sent out on a Friday every week. The spelling sheets do need to be returned to school please by the following Wednesday (test day) so that I can keep a track of who may need further support.
  • Additional homework (either Literacy and/or Maths) will be set on a Friday based on what we have been learning in class. This needs to be completed and returned into school by the following Wednesday to allow the time for me to mark it and offer the children any further support if needed. In addition, I will be running a homework club after school until 4pm once our after school club’s begin again. Please note, additional homework may not come every week

I am more than happy to answer any questions you have regarding your child and their learning in Year 5. Please feel free to make an appointment at the office, or message me on our Class Dojo page if you do have any questions or queries.

Yours sincerely,

Mrs Tomsett
