At St. Mary’s and St. Benedict’s we use the ‘Come and See’ Religious Education programme to teach RE throughout our school. ‘Come and See’ is a progressive programme of study designed to help children learn about the Catholic faith using scripture, images, video clips and prayer. We enrich this curriculum by providing additional artefacts, materials and texts to accompany the Come and See curriculum.
The programme follows a consistent process in each topic; Explore, Reveal, Respond. It provides opportunities for children to reflect on their learning and engage in collective worship.
The ‘Come and See’ curriculum will also be supported by:
- Children engaging in mass by preparing and presenting readings in masses in church and school.
- Children preparing and joining in with collective worships in class.
- Children preparing and presenting assemblies linked to the Gospel of the week.
- Children’s engagement with the chaplaincy team who present to each class regularly.
- Children’s involvement in various aspects of community life in the parish such as Pentecost Day, Advent celebrations and Easter assemblies.
Religious Education in our School
Collective Worship
Collective Worship is an essential part of the daily life of our school. As part of our Come and See scheme, we use collective worship to reflect on our learning at the end of a topic. Our Chaplaincy team also lead collective worships with our younger classes. As the children move throughout the school, they begin to plan and lead their own collective worship.
Celebration Assemblies
Each week one of our classes leads our Celebration Assembly in front of the school and parents. The children prepare and present a celebration linked to the Gospel of the week.
Our Chaplaincy Team
Our Chaplaincy Team work on a number of school and parish wide projects to support everyone in our community to live by The Gospel Values. When children begin in Year 6 they can become part of our Chaplaincy team and support others in their spiritual journey.
Our Chaplaincy team are excellent Catholic role models, promoting friendship, love and respect in school and in the wider community. They help us live by our school mission statement of
'With Jesus, we learn as a joyful family and flourish to be the best that we can be'.
Our Chaplaincy Team holds events with the Parish: collective worships, a Rosary Lunch and coffee mornings help raise money for charities and RE resources in school. With the money raised, we have managed to buy collective worship resources for each class along with class bibles.
Our Chaplaincy Team will undertake the following activities during the year:
- Planning and presenting collective worship to the younger children
- Actively participating in assemblies
- Planning and presenting in class and whole school masses
- Being involved in our church liturgical year, including special seasons such as Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Easter.
- Planning parish events such as Rosary lunches, parish coffee mornings and collective worships.
- Presenting whole school events/ initiatives such as Pentecost Day or charitable events such as CAFOD.
