Maths in EYFS, by Miss Fann

Date: 6th May 2024 @ 5:24pm

This week the children have been working on developing their counting skills by organising and counting larger sets of a wide range of objects. They have been exploring using their counting skills in a range of different contexts, including counting things that cannot be seen for example counting the number of beats on a drum or using counting to measure time when playing hide-and-seek. The children have been practising counting strategies that involve moving the objects. These included placing the objects in a line and counting along the line, or arranging them in rows and counting along each row. The children have been using the term 'touch counting' to ensure they keep track of which objects they have counted.

We left our samples for a week before documenting with photographs. We then returned the samples and left for a further 3 weeks.

Date: 25th Apr 2024 @ 9:24pm

This week the children in Beesley class have been learning the story The Very Busy Spider by Eric Carle. In 'Drawing Club' the children created their own version of the main character, the spider. The children then went on to think if there was another animal in the story who would they like the spider to meet? During our final 'Drawing Club' the children created their own version of somewhere for the spider to live instead of the web from the story. We had some fantastic ideas! One idea including having a Venus flytrap inside the spider's house.

Throughout the week the children have had the opportunity to explore other activities within the continuous provision. Activities included; creating their own spider webs using chalk to mark make and learning how to use a hole punch to create their own holes in card to make  webs by threading string or wool for their own playdough spiders. The children have all had a go at following the step by step instructions of how to draw a spider paying close attention to detail. Just like the spider, we have had a very busy week in Beesley Class!
