The children played 'Pirate Map Bingo' to help they look closely at their maps to identify features. The children then explored our school environment using Digimaps and looked at different types of maps including aerial view and ordnance survey maps. The children noticed key features such as the path that we walk up when we visit church, the KS2 running track and our outdoor area. Over the next couple of weeks the children will be creating their own maps.

Super scientists exploring floating and sinking!, by Mrs Burgess

Date: 23rd Jun 2025 @ 4:13pm

The children in Beesley class have been learning about floating and sinking.  Before we started we made a prediction about whether we thought different objects would float or sink. The children voted using their arms by putting them up if they thought the object would float and arms down if they thought the object would sink. We then tested out the objects and recorded our findings. Throughout the afternoon the children explored different objects in the water areas both inside and outside.

Afterwards the children then had a challenge to make their own boat and test it to see how many objects it could hold before it sank.

We had lots of fun exploring floating and sinking!

This week in maths the children in Reception have been focusing on reliable counting. We had a special visitor~ Matt the monkey who needed some help with counting reliably. The children have been telling Matt how to count reliably. We had some fantastic ideas including putting the objects in a line and saying the number name when touching the object.

Matt brought us some musical instruments which we have been using in maths. We have been tuning our ears into counting the sounds that we can hear. The children then had a go at choosing an instrument to play whilst their group had a go at counting the sounds.
